Bottom line: OKX Copy Trading automatically mirrors a selected lead trader’s spot or futures orders in your account. Past returns do not guarantee future results, and execution-price differences, trading fees, profit sharing, stop-losses, and liquidation can all change your actual P&L. Before you start, confirm regional availability and the trader’s settings, then set a total investment and loss limit you can afford.
Risk warning: Copy trading is not principal protection or an automatic-profit product. Spot assets can fall sharply, while leverage, funding fees, and liquidation can accelerate futures losses. Your entry price, position size, and fees may differ from the lead trader’s, and a stop-loss is not guaranteed to fill at its trigger price during a fast market. Product availability and terms can vary by region, account, and time.
What Is OKX Copy Trading?
OKX Copy Trading automatically reflects a lead trader’s orders in your account after you choose the trader and set the copy amount, maximum total investment, stop-loss conditions, and other controls. OKX’s official help materials distinguish spot from futures copy trading. The products, pairs, leverage, and limits shown in your signed-in account take priority.
Copying the same trade is not the same as earning the same return. Order-transmission time, price movement, minimum order size, your available balance, the selected multiplier, and fees can make your outcome differ from the lead trader’s.
Spot vs Futures Copy Trading
| Item | Spot copy trading | Futures copy trading |
|---|---|---|
| Orders copied | The lead trader’s spot buys and sells | Supported contract orders, including perpetual futures |
| Leverage | Not used in ordinary spot trading | May be available depending on the contract and account |
| Main loss drivers | Asset-price decline, execution-price difference, fees | Adverse price moves, leverage, funding fees, insufficient margin, liquidation |
| Core settings | Fixed or proportional amount, maximum total amount, TP/SL, Smart Sync | Copy amount, contract, margin mode, leverage, TP/SL, total loss limit |
| Where to check | Trade → Bots & Copy → Copy Trading → Spot | Trade → Bots & Copy → Copy Trading → Futures |
Spot positions are not liquidated for insufficient maintenance margin in the same way as futures positions, but a severe decline in the copied asset can still erase most of the capital. If futures mechanics are unfamiliar, first review the OKX futures trading guide for beginners for leverage, isolated and cross margin, and liquidation.
How to Start OKX Copy Trading
- In the OKX app or on the web, go to Trade → Bots & Copy → Copy Trading.
- Select spot or futures copy trading.
- Review the lead trader’s PnL, PnL%, maximum drawdown, operating history, AUM, copy-trader PnL, and open positions.
- Select Copy or Copy now.
- Set a fixed amount per order or a proportional multiplier, a maximum total investment, and the pairs to copy.
- Set a total loss limit and TP/SL for each order.
- For futures, recheck the contract, margin mode, and leverage.
- Before starting, review fees, profit sharing, and whether current open positions will be copied.
Copying ongoing positions can enter at the current market price, so your entry may differ from the lead trader’s. The official setup guide states that copy traders cannot view the liquidation price of the lead trader’s account. Do not assess risk on the assumption that you know that price; review the margin, leverage and estimated liquidation price actually shown in your own order summary and position screen.
Lead Trader Metrics to Review
| Metric | Meaning | How not to misread it |
|---|---|---|
| PnL | Cumulative profit or loss over the selected period | A larger account can produce a larger dollar result, so do not compare PnL alone |
| PnL% | Profit or loss relative to deployed capital | A short burst of high returns does not establish repeatability |
| Max drawdown | Largest peak-to-trough decline | A deep drawdown may stop or liquidate a copy account before recovery |
| Win rate | Share of profitable days among the days on which the trader led trades | One large loss can erase many small wins |
| AUM | Total capital currently allocated by copy traders | Popularity or size does not guarantee risk control |
| Copy trader PnL | Cumulative PnL of users copying the trader | Your result can differ because of entry time, settings, and fees |
| Track record and frequency | How long the trader has operated and how often they trade | A record that spans both rising and falling markets is more informative than a short sample |
Do not choose from a high-return ranking alone. Review maximum drawdown, average holding time, leverage changes, averaging down after losses, and copy-trader PnL together. Also check whether the trader’s stated strategy matches the positions they actually hold.
What Copy Amount and Stop-Loss Settings Mean
| Setting | How it works | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed amount | Fixes the amount shown in the settings: the order amount for spot, or margin per order for futures | High trading frequency can reach the maximum allocation quickly |
| Proportional amount | Multiplies the lead trader’s order size by your selected ratio | Your order size can change sharply when the lead trader changes position size |
| Maximum total amount | Caps the capital simultaneously allocated to one lead trader | New orders may stop copying at the cap, causing your portfolio to diverge |
| Total stop loss for trader | Sets a cumulative loss limit for all trades copied from that trader | You must separately choose what happens to open positions after the limit is reached |
| Take profit per order | Sets a take-profit condition for each copied order | Closing before the lead trader makes later performance diverge |
| Stop loss per order | Sets a stop-loss condition for each copied order | During volatility or thin liquidity, the fill price can differ from the trigger |
| Copy ongoing positions | Also copies positions the lead trader already holds | You may enter late at a market price far from the original entry |
The copy multiplier and leverage are different settings. As a hypothetical spot example, if the lead trader’s order is 1000 USDT and your copy multiplier is 0.1x, your order amount is 1000 × 0.1 = 100 USDT. This does not mean 0.1x leverage. For futures, distinguish fixed margin from the contract’s actual notional value, and check the separate leverage and margin-mode settings in the order summary.
If futures order methods and the difference between TP/SL and Reduce Only are unclear, read the OKX futures order types guide.
Profit Sharing and Actual P&L
Copy trading may apply lead-trader profit sharing in addition to trading fees based on your ordinary fee tier. The percentage and settlement method can vary by spot or futures, lead-trader tier, region, and account display, so do not assume a fixed rate.
Simple example: If profit eligible for settlement after trading fees is 100 USDT and the lead trader’s displayed profit-sharing rate is 10%, the estimated share is 100 × 10% = 10 USDT. The simple remainder is 90 USDT, but actual settlement may differ because of total period PnL, open trades, amounts withheld and returned, and product-specific rules.
- Check the current profit-sharing rate on the lead trader’s profile.
- Calculate trading fees and profit sharing as separate costs.
- For futures, also account for funding fees and possible liquidation costs.
- Confirm that the amount withheld before settlement may differ from the final amount.
- Check the profit-sharing entry in your trade history for the exact result.
If you hold copied perpetual futures for a long time, include the costs explained in the OKX funding-fee calculation and settlement guide.
How Is Spot Smart Sync Different?
Spot Smart Sync is designed to follow the lead trader’s overall asset-allocation ratios instead of simply copying a fixed amount per order. You allocate a total investment and choose whether to buy assets already held and where to set the total loss limit. Funds may be separated in a virtual sub-account, but that does not provide principal protection or guarantee the same execution price as the lead trader.
- Buy existing assets on: Assets already held by the lead trader may be purchased at the current market price, so your entry can differ.
- Off: Only new trades after setup are copied, so the initial allocation can differ from the existing portfolio.
- Total stop loss: Copying stops at the cumulative loss limit and follows the selected treatment for held assets.
The official Smart Sync guide does not support simply switching the copy mode while existing copied trades continue. Before considering another mode, check current trades, asset handling and settlement terms; using a new mode does not require you to sell assets or add funds unconditionally. Minimum order sizes, failed orders and execution-time differences can also make actual allocations differ from calculated proportions.
Common Reasons Copied Orders Fail
| Cause | How to check | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient Trading Account balance | Check available USDT and capital already allocated | Adjust copy amounts and existing orders before adding more funds |
| Maximum total investment reached | Check the lead trader’s Maximum total amount | Review open positions and risk before deciding whether to raise the cap |
| Lead-trader order restriction or lost eligibility | Check the profile and system notifications | Do not chase the failed order manually at market; reassess the strategy |
| Risk control triggered | Check the failure notice and pair status | Confirm whether the official restriction has cleared before retrying |
| Price-difference or spread protection | Compare the lead trader’s price with your order time | Do not chase sharp moves with a late manual order |
| Unsupported pair or order below the minimum | Check supported contracts and minimum amounts shown in your account | Reset the amount and pair only within the displayed limits |
How to Manage or Stop Copied Trades
- In the app, go to Trade → Bots & Copy → My copies. If intermediate menus such as My bots differ by version, check the current screen and the official management guide.
- Select the lead trader you want to manage.
- Change the copy amount, maximum allocation, and TP/SL for new positions.
- If needed, close an individual position yourself or select Stop copying.
- When stopping, confirm how open positions and remaining orders will be handled.
In the official management guide checked for this update, copy-setting changes apply only to new trades opened afterward, not retroactively to existing copied trades. Leverage adjustments are made separately on the futures trading screen. After selecting Stop copying, check open positions, pending orders, TP/SL and balances according to the chosen exit method; stopping new copies and closing existing positions are not the same outcome.
Seven Risks You Need to Know
- Past-performance bias: A short high-return record near the top of a ranking does not guarantee future results.
- Execution difference: Transmission delays and price moves can make your entry and exit differ from the lead trader’s.
- Strategy drift: If the lead trader changes leverage, pairs, or holding time, the risk you first evaluated also changes.
- Concentration risk: Allocating too much to one trader or pair magnifies a single failure.
- Cost accumulation: Frequent trading adds trading fees, profit sharing, and futures funding fees.
- Liquidation risk: A futures position can be liquidated under your account’s own margin and leverage conditions.
- Account and regional limits: Product availability and caps can vary by country, KYC status, and account condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does OKX Copy Trading guarantee automatic profits?
No. If the lead trader loses money, the copy account can also lose, and execution-price, fee, and settings differences can make the result worse. Past PnL and win rate do not guarantee future performance.
Are there costs in addition to trading fees?
Lead-trader profit sharing may apply. Futures can also incur funding fees and liquidation-related costs. Check the lead trader’s profile and your own transaction history for the actual rate and settlement method.
Can I close a position before the lead trader does?
Where supported, a copy trader can close a position directly or exit through TP/SL. From that point, your PnL path differs from the lead trader’s, and a market exit may incur slippage and a taker fee.
Do setting changes apply immediately to existing positions?
The official management guide applies copy-setting changes to new trades opened after the change, not to existing trades. Check existing positions’ TP/SL and margin separately, and use the relevant setting on the futures trading screen for leverage adjustments.
Is OKX Copy Trading available in every region and account?
No. OKX states that copy trading is not available in every market or jurisdiction. Do not use workarounds; rely on the product screen and terms shown for your signed-in account.
Does referral code OKDCC increase copy-trading returns?
No referral code guarantees trading performance or a lead trader’s return. Any available fee benefit can vary by account, region, VIP tier, and campaign. Check the sign-up screen before registration and My Rewards afterward. For the exact steps, see the OKX referral code OKDCC verification guide.
